Road Captains are the people who help with the planning, coordination and execution of the rides that we go on as a group. They're responsible for leading and assisting the group during our rides so that we can all have a safe and fun time!

So when a Road Captain talks to you about your riding techniques or habits, remember that they are trying to make you a better and safer rider, both while you are alone or riding with a group. It's not personal, it's all about SAFETY!

Group Riding Class

The next Group Riding class will be held at the Destination H.D. store in Fife at a date and time indicated on the Event Calendar. So check back to see when the next class is, so you can register. For only $7, you will receive valuable training and safety tips that you will use when riding with a group of two or more. You will also come away with a handbook of riding terms, hand signals and riding etiquette, plus a nice run-pin. You can pre-register for the next class at the New Bike Sales Department of Destination Harley Davidson in Fife. Just give them a call at 253-922-3700, or stop by the next time you are in the store.

Group Riding Policies

1. Staggered formation should be maintained except on narrow roads when riders should use single-file formation. Maintain a 2 second gap behind the bike ahead in the same lane. Maintain a 1 second gap behind the bike ahead in the alternate lane. Allow for more following distance as road conditions require. Maintain your lane position unless you need to move over to fill a gap in the formation. Newer riders should be placed with experienced riders near the middle of the group.

2. Passing other vehicles should be done one-by-one. The lead bike should not attempt to initiate passing unless he/she estimates that there will be sufficient room and time to allow the entire mini-group to pass safely.

3. Hand signals should be understood by every rider in the group and passed back when used by the lead riders. (Very important with debris in the road or with sudden changes/stopping). See Safety Page!

4. If you leave the group inform the group leader or a road captain. If you become separated from the group, stay on the designated route. If you make any stops, stay within view from the road so as to be spotted by road captains.

5. Emergency Pull-Off: Signal your intentions to the bike following and proceed to the shoulder. A road captain behind will pull-off to render assistance. The remaining bikes should stay on the road to continue to the next rest stop or designated stop, whichever comes first.

6. Each rider is responsible for being well rested, having their cycle in proper working condition with a full tank of gas (and an empty bladder) before Chapter rides. Be prepared for inclement weather. For the safety of the group, riders should separate drinking alcoholic beverages and riding. (Wait until the bikes are parked for the rest of the day.)
